Downloaded codec packs don't neccessarily include legal copies of copyrighted codecs and the installers may also replace your legitimate functional codecs with illicit or outdated versions, or poor 3rd party CODECs are subject to other parties copyrightsĪnd licencing fees, with a few being open-source or free. 3rd party CODECs always had to be downloaded separately or were installed along with media related apps that used them.
